Rewiring my Jeep, Day 3(ish)

Over the weekend I spent about a day and a half working on wiring the dash of the jeep.

First I pulled all the gauges out, and laid them on a towel, then began figuring out the wiring. Matching up the speedhut gauges to the Painless Wiring harness was… well, mostly painless.

The harness had a LOT of extra connections I just didn’t need. For anything not needed, I just put some heat shrink tubing over the ends of the wires to keep them from shorting out, wrapped them up, and zip tied them out of the way. For everything that was used, I clipped the pre-installed connectors off, since they were all for the stock gauges, and crimped on my own.

I labelled every cable clearly, as well, so I could make sure all the labels matched up when done. That took half of Saturday. On Sunday morning I assembled the new radio (a Retro Sound radio, looks old, has bluetooth) and got it ready. I didn’t care for the backing spacers for the knobs, so I 3d printed some to use instead.
Sunday afternoon was spent double checking all my wiring from the day before, then moving all the gauges into the dash, and making all the connections. Routing the wires was interesting, and probably isn’t ideal… but it’ll do.
The last thing to install in the dash are the speakers. The mounting posts are totally worn, so I ran to the store and got a die to clean them up. I worried that the speakers looked like they were a bit too close to the dash, so I stopped there to 3d print some spacers (I couldn’t find any, so designed my own). I’ve also decided to get an amp, and add some 6x9 speakers by the rollbar behind the front seats, so I ordered all of that today.
Next up, starting on the bits under the hood.
